The chiminea (also spelt chimnea or chimenea) is a wood or charcoal burning stove for outdoor use and is a modern version of a traditional Mexican outdoor fireplace. They can be made out of clay, cast iron or aluminium and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

I am hoping that this article will help dispel many of the myths about worm keeping and encourage you to give a worm or several thousand a home!

A wormery is a container which contains special composting worms who munch their way through your leftover food and turn it into rich black crumbly compost, another by-product of all this activity is a black fluid called leachate which when diluted makes an excellent plant food. The compost can be used in your borders or potted plants; the leachate needs to be diluted 10:1 with water before being used as a plant food.

There are many types of wormerys on the market many of them designed to make harvesting of the finished compost and handling of the worms a doddle. One of the best is the Can-O-Worms Kit from Evengreener. The system consists of a base tray with legs and a tap for collecting the leachate. There are three trays with holes for the worms to move through, a lid and of course the all important worms! When the first tray is full of food the second tray is added and so on, as the worms eat the leftovers and turn them to compost they move upwards to the new trays leaving behind the lovely compost. The kit also comes with full instructions on how to care for your wormery.

Will they escape?
The wormery has a lid which will discourage escape attempts but if the worms are all gathering on the inside of the lid there may be something wrong in the wormery, perhaps something has been put in there which the worms don’t like such as citrus fruit.

 What do they eat?
Worms eat leftover cooked and raw vegetable and food scraps, pizza, pasta tea bags, fruit and veg (but NOT citrus fruits), rice, egg shells, bread, cereals and small amounts of paper and card. Do NOT feed them salts, oils, eggs, onion, garlic, bones, meat, fish, curry, weeds or animal faeces. They will not eat these items and they will make your wormery smell bad, some of them will actually harm or kill the worms.

How much do they eat?
The rate that they consume the food will depend on the amount of worms in your wormery.  A single worm will consume up to half its body weight in food per day. A KG of worms will consume about 500g per day.

Do they smell?
As long as you are feeding the right sort of food and there are enough hungry worms in your wormery it won’t smell so can be kept near the back door in easy reach of the kitchen or even kept on a balcony.

Will I have to add more worms?
No as long as conditions are good in the bin the worms will multiply all by themselves and their numbers will be dictated by the amount of food that is available to them.

There is a plethora of websites out there with recipes for slow cooked delights promising to make a delicious meal out of the toughest, cheapest cuts of meat. Being a recent slow cooker convert myself I can attest to this and have found slow cooking a very forgiving cooking technique. There is no need for vigilance, skill or precision! The magic of putting all the ingredients in, putting the lid on and leaving it to do its thing for eight hours or so and then being rewarded with a delicious meal is wonderful. Cuts of meat which would have you chewing like a camel for 10 minutes with normal cooking techniques, are transformed into tender and melt in the mouth morsels.

An example of a simple recipe is below
Cut braising steak into chunks, or buy the ready cut version. Toss the pieces in seasoned flour. Brown in a frying pan along with onion. While the meat is browning pop whatever vegetables you want into the pot, chopped carrots, parsnips, mushrooms, peas, small potato, in fact whatever you think will be tasty. Place the meat over the vegetables and then add stock to just below the level of the meat. Cover and leave for 8 hours on low setting and that’s it! So easy even I can do it and produce something delicious!

Growing vegetables in containers certainly is the easiest way to get started growing your own vegetables. There are so many different crops that grow really well in containers such as tomatoes, peppers, lettuces, radish, baby carrots and even potatoes. In this article we will share with you some details of how to grow these crops and the containers and special care they will need to be grown successfully.

Growing Tomatoes In Containers

This is certainly one of the most rewarding vegetables to grow in containers, tomatoes grow very well in pots and hanging baskets and if you select the right tomato variety you can expect hundreds of tomatoes from a plant. Lettuce can be grown to be small as can carrots and the taste is at it's best when small too! Radish are extremely fast growing so you will get a crop very fast!

Herbs On The Windowsill

This is a quick and easy way to begin your own little garden and will provide you with fresh herbs over the summer months. Many herbs such as parsley, basil and mint can easily be grown in a container on a windowsill. These will be perfect to add a little extra taste into your cooking! You can often buy special packs that have some small pots and herb seeds that can be used to grow herbs on a windowsill.

There are a number of other different vegetables that grow well in containers but these are the easiest to begin with. You don't even need to have a garden to begin growing your own vegetables as many plants can grow perfectly well in a small pot on the windowsill. It's well worth trying your hand at growing vegetables in containers as the rewards, the fun you'll have, the money you save and the taste of the fresh vegetables is well worth the effort.
