There are many benefits to home composting the first and most important being that it is free! Secondly the compost will improve the structure of your garden soil, improve drainage but also improve moisture retaining properties. The nutrients in home compost remain available to the plants for a lot longer than commercially available fertilizers.

First of all you will need to decide if you will make your own container for the heap or buy a manufactured one.

A homemade containment area can be made with posts and wire mesh or posts and wooden slats, gaps need to be left between the slats to allow air to circulate. It is important that you have good access to the heap for adding materials, maintenance and of course harvesting your finished compost.

Manufactured compost containers come in a huge range of shapes and sizes with some mounted on an axle type frame which allows the whole container to be rotated and turned upside down to mix the compostable materials.

The secret to an effective compost heap whatever containment method is used, is a wide range of materials and regular mixing to aerate the materials and speed up the process. Foul smelling compost heaps can be caused by several things. The wrong materials may have been used or your compost heap may have become anaerobic (not in the presence of oxygen).
The composting process that we want in the garden compost heap is aerobic (i.e the materials are breaking down in the presence of oxygen) this is achieved by mixing different types of materials together including twiggy plant material, oxygen is able to circulate freely maintaining the thousands of types of microorganisms, fungi, worms, insects and bacteria. Anaerobic decomposition can be caused by a heap which is too wet, does not have the right mix of materials and is not turned on a regular basis.

There are a wide range of materials which can be included in your compost heap and several which should never be included.

Good composting materials:

• Egg shells
• Tea bags
• Green hay
• Cow/horse manure
• Vegetable and fruit peelings
• Wood chips and sawdust (but ensure that they are not from chemically treated wood)
• Grass cuttings (these are excellent as they increase the heat within the compost heap)
• Prunings from shrubs and plants (woody material is good as it helps to improve the circulation of air in the heap)
• Shredded paper and cardboard
• Weeds (though if the temperature within your heap does not get high enough the seeds and roots may survive

Do NOT try to compost:

• Bones (these will not compost down and will attract pests and animals to your heap)
• Meat (see above)
• Dairy products (these will make the compost heap smell foul)
• Dog, cat or human faeces.
• Diseased plant material (the disease may survive the composting process and infect other plants in your garden in the future when the compost is used)
