It is designed to deter the squirrels but not harm them. The repeller is battery powered with automatic activation when a squirrel jumps on the feeder - it is calibrated to detect squirrels but not birds. When a squirrel is detected the machine rotates and the squirrel leaves the feeder. Once the squirrel has tried this a couple of times it won't return.
